Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only participant to make it to the final poker table in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker recorded history up against Daniel Negreanu. Gus raked in a big pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has earned many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest gamblers around the world. While participating in internet poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. He often participates in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen usually buys in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He waits patiently for a good hand and then goes all in. I know Gus is an excellent poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is flat broke, he has little or no reason to sit at the game with the min buy-in.
Playing for the min takes most of the expertise out of deep stack poker. Hansen is supposed to be one of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the total dollar value. I think television can alter our view of the real world every now and then. The best players in the world may be players you have never heard of. Gus can be seen participating in net poker on Full Tilt. He commonly participates in high stakes omaha hold’em and texas hold’em. Gus has shown himself as a tournament player. Can he use his abilities in cash rounds?
