Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to discover anything he could about the game. Phil routinely would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the detrimental feedback from others kill his goal of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
Phil began competing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching period and winning was not a regular outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he is learning every single day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors every single game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Even though Ivey has won some big tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
